So Whom Did HR Folks Like—Bush or Kerry?

Nationwide Poll on HRhero.com Web Site Reveals HR Professionals as Divided as the Nation as a Whole

NASHVILLE, TN, November 3, 2004 — A nationwide poll of more than 2,000 HR managers, released the day of the U.S. presidential election, shows human resources professionals favored President Bush over Senator Kerry by a margin of 49% to 46%—a result that surprised some observers.

“The stereotype is that HR people are warm and fuzzy ‘people people,’ and that therefore they might tend to be politically liberal and vote Democratic,” said James Sokolowski, a former political reporter who is web editor at Hrhero.com, which conducted the poll. “But our online poll shows slightly higher support for President Bush and what are perceived as his more pro-business policies.”

Conducted my M. Lee Smith Publishers LLC on its heavily trafficked www.HRhero.com web site, the nationwide poll also revealed that, even as they rushed out to the polls, 2% of HR professionals were still undecided as to how they would cast their vote.

Finally—and as further evidence of the high level of interest in the election—only 19 of those polled (fewer than 1%) indicated they weren’t voting at all.
