Violence in the Workplace - How to Prevent and Handle It - to Be Spotlighted in Nationally Broadcast Audio Seminar

NASHVILLE, TN, September 16, 2004 — The statistics are shocking. Over 40 % of women who die at work are murdered. Workplace violence is the #1 cause of death or injury on the job for women, and the #2 cause of death or injury for men. (Source: American Bar Association.)

To help employers prevent this very serious problem—or effectively cope with it if it occurs—M. Lee Smith Publishers will present “Violence in Your Workplace: How to Prevent and Deal with It” a live audio seminar to be broadcast nationally on Thursday, September 30, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Eastern Time, 10 to 11:00 a.m. Central Time.

Guest speaker for the event will be John B. Phillips, Jr., the national award-winning employment law attorney and video host whom ‘USA Today,’ ‘The New York Times,’ ‘Human Resource Executive’ magazine, and other news media have relied on for clear, authoritative workplace-law insights.

Because “Violence in Your Workplace: How to Prevent and Deal with It” is an audio seminar, registrants do not leave their offices to participate. They simply tune in to the live 60-minute presentation via their own office speakerphone or telephone, and may train as many employees as they like for one per-listening-site fee of $167. Companies register by calling KRM Information Services (which is handling registration for this event) at 800-775-7654.

By listening to the audio seminar, employers and human resources professionals will learn:

  • Why negligent hiring and negligent retention can have a (literally) lethal impact on your workplace;
  • Why treating employees with consistency is all-important in preventing workplace violence;
  • Why workplace threats often foretell actual violence—and what to do about it;
  • Best ways to discipline an employee with violent tendencies;
  • Best ways to fire an employee who has demonstrated violent tendencies;
  • How to get law enforcement involved, when the situation dictates;
  • What to do when violence results from a mental disability—and what the Americans with Disabilities Act says about this;
  • How to use an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to effectively deal with workplace violence; and
  • What employers must know about the workers’ compensation implications of workplace violence.

“Violence in Your Workplace: How to Prevent and Deal with It” will be the second audio seminar in an all-new, 4-part series especially designed for supervisors. Each audio seminar will be presented by John B. Phillips, and will give supervisors the guidance they need to handle some of today’s hottest workplace challenges.

Upcoming audio seminars include:

  • “How Smart Companies Control Workers’ Comp Costs” – September 16.
  • “Managing Your Workplace to Avoid Union Organization” – October 14.
  • “How to Avoid Triggering Employees to Sue”-- October 28.

Each audio seminar is also available on CD.
